PROJECT GUTENBERG (1971)

  


·        Name origin: Johannes Gutenberg’s (German printer) famous movable printing press in 1455 (The first book printed in this press was “Gutenberg 42 Line Bible”)

 

·        Project Gutenberg was started by Michael Hart to create a free computer classics library at the university of Illinois

 

 

·        Book written by Michael Hart: Declaration of Independence

 

·        Oldest digitization project

 

 

·        The united states declaration of Independence was the first Project Gutenberg e text

 

·        Follows US Copyright Law

 

·        Firstly started with a target of 10000 free eBooks

 

·        The eBooks can be freely downloaded and read and redistributed for noncommercial use

 

·        In starting phase entering text method was followed but later on accepted the scanning procedures for the digitization of the books  

 

·        From the initial project Gutenberg several other similar projects were also started like :

 

·        PG of European union

·        PG of Luxemburg

·        PG of Philippines

·        PG of Europe

·        PG of Australia
